Sun protection is more important than ever, but it’s possible that your (lighter) extensions may not react well to certain products. Because we truly care about helping you enjoy your Zascha Hair for as long as possible, we’ve done extensive research to find out which products are safe to use and help prevent discoloration!

Why are my extensions turning orange/pink?

Sunscreen gets its protective power from UV filters. However, certain UV filters can react with human hair extensions. This reaction may cause the hair to turn pink or orange when it comes into contact with these ingredients. Super frustrating, of course — you want to be able to apply sunscreen to your neck and ears with peace of mind. The photo next to this text clearly shows what can happen when using the wrong UV spray.

Which UV filters are safe, and which ones should you avoid?

Tests have shown that mineral sunscreens/UV filters are always a safe choice. Some non-mineral UV filters are also suitable.
This might make things a bit confusing — but don’t worry, we’ve found a little trick to help you out:

Want to be sure you’ve got the right product, or curious to check your favorite brand?
Take a photo of the ingredient list on the back of the product and send it to ChatGPT with the following question:

“Can I use this sunscreen with my (colored) 100% human hair extensions without them turning orange or pink? → (link to product or photo)”

Mineral UV filters have a positive effect:

A mineral filter helps prevent discoloration of the hair caused by sunscreen. We’ll come back to discoloration caused by chlorine later in the blog.

The best ones from all the tests:

These sunscreens have been tested by Marlieke, and are highly recommended by us!

1: Kruidvat- Solait Natural 30 SPF 2: Naïf Zonnebrand Spray SPF30 100 ML 3: SeventyOne Eco Sun Spray SPF50+ 4: Ultrasun Face Zonnebrandlotion SPF30

The Solait Natural is available at Kruidvat stores and is suitable for the face and neck, just like UltraSun Face, which is available at Holland & Barrett.

SeventyOne Eco Sun Spray (also available at Holland & Barrett) and Naïf Sunscreen Spray SPF30 100ML are both suitable for the body.

With these products, your sun protection is all set! ☀️ However, we always recommend being extra careful with things like chlorine and salt water too.
We share lots of helpful tips about this in our summer blog.
Just curious how we recommend washing your extensions?

Accidentally ended up with some discoloration? No stress!

Fortunately, we’ve also found a solution for when things do go wrong: Malibu C Hard Water

How to use:

  • Mix the Malibu C powder in a small bowl with water. The less water you use, the more concentrated the product will be.
  • Apply the product to towel-dried hair and gently work the crystals into the hair.
  • Let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly and follow up with your usual hair care routine.

Are you more of a visual learner? In this Instagram link, Marlieke shows how she removes the warm tones from her extensions. Malibu C is available at professional hair supply stores or via the button below.

How do I keep my extensions looking beautiful during summer?

A detailed explanation about sun, chlorine, and salt water can be found in our summer blog, available via the button below.

But the real question is, of course: what happened to the lady in the first photo?

Luckily, she was able to use Malibu C during her holiday — and the results speak for themselves! She’s back to shining bright in Bali. All’s well that ends well! ✨🌴
